James Alexander of The Bar-Kays Named Grand Marshal for 30th Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven
The Academy for Youth Empowerment is proud to announce James Alexander, founding bassist of the legendary Memphis group The Bar-Kays, as Grand Marshal of the 30th Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven.
The milestone parade will take place Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM along Elvis Presley Boulevard from Shelby Drive to Laudeen Drive.
This year’s theme, “A Season to Be Thankful — For Our Community, Our Families, Our Future,” celebrates the people and institutions that have helped shape Whitehaven and Memphis across generations.
Alexander’s selection as Grand Marshal reflects that spirit.
A Memphis Music Legacy
James Alexander is a founding member and longtime bassist of The Bar-Kays, one of the most enduring groups to emerge from Memphis’ legendary Stax Records era. The group formed in Memphis in the mid-1960s while its members were still teenagers and soon became part of the city’s developing soul music movement.
The Bar-Kays broke through with “Soul Finger” in 1967, which reached No. 3 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 17 on the Hot 100. Their success caught the attention of Otis Redding, who chose the young Memphis musicians as his touring band.
Alexander was not aboard the December 1967 plane that crashed into Lake Monona near Madison, Wisconsin, killing Redding and four members of the Bar-Kays. He and trumpeter Ben Cauley later helped rebuild the group, continuing a musical legacy that would stretch across soul, R&B and funk for decades.
Alexander also played bass on Isaac Hayes’ Academy Award-winning “Theme from Shaft,” and The Bar-Kays performed at the historic Wattstax concert in Los Angeles in 1972.
Honored at Home and Beyond
The Bar-Kays were inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and the National Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
In 2022, Memphis honored Alexander by renaming the South Memphis street where he grew up James E. Alexander Avenue. The Stax Museum noted that his childhood home stood on the street just blocks from the former Stax Records location in Soulsville USA.
His career has also included appearances on some of the nation’s largest stages. In 2013, Alexander and The Bar-Kays were among the Memphis artists who performed during the White House’s “In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul” celebration.
Through more than six decades in music, Alexander has remained closely connected to the Memphis sound and the community that helped produce it.
A Fitting Grand Marshal for a 30-Year Celebration
The 30th Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven is a celebration not only of the holiday season, but also of Memphis history, community pride and the generations that continue to build the city’s future.
Alexander’s journey—from a young Memphis musician playing local clubs to helping establish one of the most recognizable names in funk and soul—reflects the kind of Memphis story the parade seeks to celebrate.
As Grand Marshal, Alexander will help lead a special 30th anniversary parade featuring marching bands, schools, churches, businesses, civic organizations, youth groups, dance teams and community participants from across Memphis.

For Our Community • Our Families • Our Future
As the Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven marks three decades, The Academy for Youth Empowerment is using the occasion to recognize the people who have contributed to the community’s history while continuing to inspire the next generation.
Having a Memphis music figure whose career began with young people creating something extraordinary in their own community makes Alexander’s participation especially meaningful for the 30th anniversary celebration.

For the blog photo, the Stax Museum and Memphis Music Hall of Fame both have published photographs of Alexander, but I would use one only after confirming the photo’s reuse/permission terms rather than simply copying it from the site.
